My Passion
Day in and day out I hear from women who are frustrated by changes that happen to their body as they get older, by a fashion industry that focuses on women who are young, tall and thin and ignores anyone who isn’t all of those things, and by super-sized stores that are overwhelming to navigate. When did this get to be so complicated, they ask?
That’s where I come in. With 30+ years’ experience as a fashion stylist, my focus is on helping women feel good about who they are. I don’t just throw a bunch of stodgy fashion rules at them or try to make them dress like someone they’re not. Instead, I help them recognize those inner qualities that make them special, and show them how to reflect that on the outside through their wardrobe and personal style choices.

7 Things You Might Not Know About Me
- I actually (shocking to me now!) entered a pageant when I was 21 and came in second runner-up. I was ‘Miss Food Mart.’
- I was supposed to be called Ginny until I was born with red hair and Ginger seemed infinitely more fitting.
- I was dreadfully shy as a teenager and it wasn’t until I was in college and someone thought I was ‘stuck up’ that I realized I needed to move beyond my shyness (while still celebrating that I’m an introvert).
- I stopped eating red meat in my mid-twenties, but had no idea what veganism was (or that I would want to become vegan) until 25 years later!
- When I came out as a lesbian in 1981, my mom and I spent a couple of years doing speaking engagements dispelling myths about who a lesbian is or what she must look like and sharing the challenges that came up for us along the way.
- I begged my parents to send me to an all girls’ high school (MacDuffie) so I could get away from the boys who threw rocks at me at the bus stop (they didn’t like me and called me a goodie-goodie because I was quiet and got good grades). Thank you, boys! It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
- I traveled to 6 European countries (in 13 days!) while in college as part of a small women’s chorus touring and singing—we even went to Innsbruck, Austria a couple of weeks before the winter Olympics were held there…breathtaking!

Fashion Tips
- Expand your wardrobe beyond black. While most women have at least some black in their wardrobe too often their closet is a sea of black because it’s so easy. Need a boost? Try adding some color. Four colors that look good on most people are: forest green, deep periwinkle, rich teal and watermelon.
- Fit is important: tailoring a garment so it fits you perfectly increases your self-confidence and makes even an inexpensive garment look great. If you are not willing to tailor it (even if you only paid $5 for the garment), then leave it at the store!
- Never settle for good enough. Only buy something if you love it and it makes you smile when you wear it. Everything else will just sit in your closet taking up space.
- Make sure your wardrobe expresses who you are. Are you sweet, dynamic, feisty or serene (or something else)? Be sure what you wear reflects your inner beauty and you will always be excited to get dressed.
- What can you do to feel even better about an outfit? Try adding more color, different shoes, an accessory you love, or your best accessory…your smile!
- Complete the outfit – No matter how seductive the price is, if you cannot make a complete outfit with it (either in the store or knowing what you have at home), do not buy it.
- Do not shop if you are tired, desperate (you need it for that night!) or crabby – chances are good you will make poor choices or leave frustrated. You are better off wearing something you already own (even if you don’t love it) or borrowing something than spending money on something that will just sit in your closet.
- Banish your magnifying mirrors! Yes, I understand that sometimes they are necessary for applying eye makeup but if so, stick to that and then put them away immediately. Do not spend time examining and critiquing your face through a 5- or 10-magnitude mirror. Yikes! Everyone on the planet can find something to obsess about in one of those.
- Learn to create visual interest and personality in your outfit. If your outfit feels blah, add an interesting accessory, some texture or a beautiful print to enhance a basic look.
- So many people get stuck shopping at the same place over and over. If you don’t like the results, it’s time to find some new places to shop.
- Keep it positive. If you go shopping with the attitude that there are no shoes out there that fit you…that your feet are impossible and everything hurts…all the good shoes are too expensive…guess what you’ll find! You guessed it – you’ll get exactly what you expect. Start to change all that now by focusing on what you do want to find and that it will be easier than you think. The results will surprise you!
- Beautiful, effective, synthetic makeup brushes have claimed their stake in the beauty industry, and the truth is that they do just as good a job as natural hair brushes…except no animals suffered to create them.
- Do not shop when you are crabby or rushed. Either take 20 minutes and go have a cup of tea, relax and start over, or go home and shop another day.
- Think carefully about where you put your handbag. The last thing you want to do is have it on the floor of a public bathroom (or any bathroom for that matter) and a few minutes later on your kitchen table.
- How you dress for work is scrutinized by women coming up the corporate ladder. This is an incredible opportunity to model professionalism & advise by example.
- When you see someone wearing a pair of shoes (or other garment) you like, stop her. Tell her you love her shoes and was wondering where she got them. She’ll be delighted you noticed and will be happy to share. And, you just might discover a new resource!
- If your coloring is deep and rich and your voice is light and airy, you’ll want to add softness and feminine touches to your outfit, especially around your face.
- Pay attention to what catches your eye. If it intrigues you it never hurts to try it on. The worst case scenario is that it looks terrible or doesn’t fit right (and can’t be tailored) and you take it off and put it back on the rack. But it might look great, too!
- “If your clothes could talk, what would they say about you?” Write down whatever comes to your mind first – do not censor it. Then, ask yourself…is it saying what you want it to say? If not, how can you change it?
- Settling for less than fabulous when it comes to what you wear always costs you more (in time, aggravation and money) in the long run.
‘That’s So You!’ Book Information
These days so many women over 40 are frustrated when it comes to shopping for clothes and creating a wardrobe and personal style they love. When they walk into a store and see only styles designed for teenagers or perhaps their body has changed and clothes no longer fit the way they used to, or their eyes glaze over because there are too many choices and they don’t know where to begin, they are often left wondering if they don’t shop at the right stores, if their budget isn’t big enough or if they need the body of a model to look great.
That’s So You is for the woman who is in a fashion rut, who’s longing for guidance to create a wardrobe and personal style she loves, but doesn’t know where to begin. It’s for any woman (especially those over 35) whose wardrobe screams “good enough” while her heart says “I want to look great.” She will learn how to avoid fashion no-nos, create a signature style, shop with ease, blend comfort and beauty, and, (yay!) age gracefully.
Book review excerpts:
“When it comes to overcoming the inner and outer obstacles that prevent women from feeling terrific about how they look, there’s no one more qualified than Ginger Burr. She is a fashion master!” — Cheryl Richardson, author of New York Times best-sellers Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers.
“Finally a book that doesn’t give you set rules. ‘Wear high heels to be stylish’, ‘Don’t leave the house without make-up’, ‘Wear X if your shape is Z’, ‘Every woman needs xyz’. Thankfully you will not find this kind of advice in here.
The book starts out in no uncertain terms that you have to figure out what YOU feel comfortable with and it guides you on that discovery. This is the first book where I feel respected whatever my choice may be.”
“I am in my early 50’s and found this book to contain very useful and practical suggestions. I could hardly put it down when I was reading it, I felt like Ginger Burr was talking to me directly. I read the book 3 months ago and have used her advice since which gives me more confidence when shopping, putting outfits together at home and getting rid of unwanted items. I have also become vegetarian as she has a section on cruelty to animals which I had not thought of before.”

I LOVE your ‘Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered’ newsletters so much. I read them all and order several items from each one, and even save them for future reference. They are a blessing…so helpful and so convenient, especially since my schedule is so hectic. I love to shop, but even online shopping takes time. The newsletters made online shopping much easier.
