Vegan Fashion: No Longer an Oxymoron

VEGNEWS MAGAZINE (JULY/AUGUST ’07) VOTED GINGER ONE OF THE “25 MOST FASCINATING VEGETARIANS” OF 2007 FOR HER WORK AS A VEGAN IMAGE CONSULTANT

Many women look at me like I have four heads when I tell them I am an image consultant and a vegan (definition of vegan*). How can that be, they wonder? A vegan fashion stylist? Aren’t the two things mutually exclusive? Since vegans don’t wear wool (click here to learn more about wool), silk, suede, or leather and that is what many designers use, what does a vegan who advocates cruelty free shopping and also enjoys fashion do?

It is true. With so many celebrities sporting furs (Miley Cyrus wore a full length white fox fur coat (that means more than 40 fox led miserable lives and were killed to make this coat) on New Year’s Eve 2013), carrying the latest handbag made of the “finest” leather, and wearing shoes made of some exotic animal skin, being a vegan who wants to dress with style feels like a lonely endeavor. Increasingly, however, vegan fashions are catching the public’s interest and eye. While your local department store might not advertise a sale on “vegan fashions” per se, stylish, cruelty free, vegan clothing and accessories are available everywhere at every price point. While you might have to look a little harder, the vegan lifestyle no longer relegates you solely to earthy, casual dress.

Cruelty-Free Shopping Is Not As Limiting As You Might Think

If you are a vegan, you know that finding vegan clothing, especially appropriate dressy winter coats and shoes, is the trickiest. While the choices in cruelty free clothing are not huge, they are available, and the trend is growing. (For example, internet stores like Zappos allow you to search based on fabrics/materials you want to wear so you can choose synthetic leather or microfiber, for instance.) For many women, wading through all this while also considering what actually looks and feels good on you, can still feel like a task of mythic proportions. Total Image Consultants can help streamline the whole process and help you feel not only like the best-dressed vegan in Boston or even worldwide but make you the envy of all your friends, vegan or not!

Acting as your personal shopper and based on your needs and budget, Total Image Consultants will help you choose a store or mall where we can do more efficient cruelty free shopping. I know the best, most chic places to shop that also offer fashionable, affordable vegan clothing, saving you hours, days or even weeks of searching the city or the internet for the vegan fashions you seek. Your cruelty free shopping spree can last for as long or short as you want.

Selecting Vegan Clothing to Fit Your Personal Style As Well As Your Lifestyle

Women of all persuasions, whether vegan or omnivore, often share a similar dilemma, that is knowing how to: choose colors that make them sparkle, draw focus to the parts of their body they do like and away from the parts they don’t, and find styles that look good on them and that speak to who they are.

As a vegan fashion stylist I help you address these concerns while supporting your vegan values. Most stores have a variety of fabrics to choose from, so, the good news is that you can enjoy variety and personal expression in your fashion and still dress with compassion. It’s the best of both worlds.

* A vegan (pronounced vee-gun) is someone who makes choices (food, clothing, and other purposes) that exclude all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals. This includes avoiding eating all animal flesh, fish, poultry, eggs, honey, and dairy as well as wearing or using (as much as is possible and practical) products tested on animals or made from leather, silk, down, wool, fur, beeswax, pearls or derived in part from animals.

Thank you very much for my Fashion Fit Formula. I’ve spent several very productive hours in my closet adjusting and pinning garments, and I can now see how making subtle changes to the vertical lines of my clothing will make a dramatic improvement to my silhouette. I’ve also been amazed at how a dress that was “almost right” became fantastic once I taped up the hem to my correct length. I’m thrilled to be revitalizing my wardrobe by ensuring that all my clothing fits and flatters my body lines.
