Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered Fashion Trend Update – Fall 2022

The Fall always brings rich, yummy colors and soft, cozy textures. This year is no exception, although we are seeing quite a few bright tones and even some softer, light colors breaking through. This is welcome for those of you who do not like or feel good in darker colors.

In this season’s trend update, I will share some of my favorite (bewitched) looks trending for Fall as well as ideas about who wears them best AND a few styles to approach with caution or completely ignore (bothered & bewildered!).

There aren’t any earthshattering, crazy styles with a few notable exceptions you’ll see below, but I’m excited to see some trends returning (yay!) that have been difficult to find for a few years.

Have fun reading this and exploring what you might want to add to your wardrobe for the upcoming season or perhaps feel inspired to rework some pieces you already own.

Let’s see what’s hot this Fall!

BEWITCHED

Color

For some reason, the trend reporters feel it’s important to declare that black is popular this Fall. No kidding…when has it not been popular in the past few decades! But, thankfully, there are other notable color trends to watch and explore. One of the best is that a beautiful rich, deep brown is more available than it has been in many years and it’s a welcome relief from all the black and gray. My suggestion would be that if deep brown is one of your best neutrals grab it now before it disappears again.

We are also seeing some brighter tones, like emerald green, lots of cobalt blue, bright pink, a wide variety of reds as well as a few softer colors like lavender and blush. I’d say there’s pretty much something for everyone if look hard enough.

Here’s a great example: Why settle for a basic neutral coat when you can have one in a gorgeous pink (or one of 6 other beautiful colors):

On the other hand, this pretty blush colored cozy corduroy jacket is perfect for someone with softer coloring:

Metallics

I suppose you could add this to the color trend above, but I feel it deserves its own category. Metallic shoes and handbags are making a big comeback and I’m thrilled. When in doubt wearing a metallic shoe (in your best metal tone) will go with nearly everything. And, the same is true for a metallic handbag. I’m not talking sparkly – that’s a different trend (but very fun!!). I’m referring to a softer, more subtle metallic in gold, silver, pewter, copper, bronze…whatever tone works best for you.

Whether you want a basic, comfortable gold metallic flat:

Or a silver sparkly high-top sneaker:

There are tons of options available out there!

Bomber & Moto Jackets

These casual jackets have been popular for a long time, but we are seeing more and more of them and in a wide variety of colors and fabrics. Here’s a pretty olive satin bomber jacket:

Or here’s a different twist on a moto jacket – softer, with no hardware and slightly cropped:

Blazers

One of the best things about blazers this season is that they are not just plain old black or gray and it’s about time! We’re seeing lots of colors and prints. While there are single-breasted styles available, double-breasted blazers are gaining popularity (1980’s style). Be careful. Some of those can have you drowning in fabric. They often don’t accentuate your waist if you want your blazer to do that so they can look extremely boxy. Here is an example of a pretty double-breasted jacket that works on a lot of bodies and comes in 4 beautiful colors:

Popular Prints

We are seeing a wide variety of prints that are popular this Fall which is fun. There’s something for everyone whether you want the ubiquitous animal print, florals, geometrics or plaid. Speaking of plaid, there are some fun takes on it – not just your traditional plaids – like this beautiful jewel-toned plaid blouse:

Or try this rosy red (a popular color this fall) floral top with a feminine flair that can easily be worn under a cardigan, blazer or denim jacket.

This rich floral top is also stunning and the flowers a perfect size for almost anyone (if you can wear these intense colors). Yay!

BOTHERED

Dresses

You might be surprised to see dresses in this category and, for sure, not all dresses belong here. What is wonderful is that dresses of every imaginable length are available, but what I’m also seeing, that I’m not as keen on, is a lot of what I call ‘Little House on the Prairie’ dresses. Yes, those can be fun if your inner beauty words have a free-spirited, bohemian, natural, unconventional or winsome feel, but they also tend to have a lot of fabric with very little, if any, definition, so you can feel like you’re overwhelmed by fabric. Or they can feel kind of cute or almost like a nightgown or they have a tie at the waist which, at least for me, often makes me feel like a blob. Yes, these styles can be extremely comfortable, but be sure you love how it looks as well as how it feels or don’t let them anywhere near your closet (that’s my approach haha!).

This floral wrap dress in a trending floral caught my eye:

Or, for something a little different, this midi shirt dress in a dramatic print is fun (and it could easily be cut to a shorter length). Please note that this style will work better on a slightly straighter body because the design doesn’t have curves OR wear it open as a duster with pants and a tank underneath.

Double-Breasted Blazers

I know I mentioned these above, but it bears repeating. Be very careful about double-breasted jackets. They add width in the middle of our bodies and they are often oversized and boxy. This is totally fine if you style it in a way that feels fun and not overpowering or frumpy. And, it’s a trend that can easily be skipped because single-breasted jackets and blazers are just as popular now as well.

Here’s an example of a tweed (also very popular this Fall) blazer that is a curvy double-breasted style:

BEWILDERED

Dresses

You’re not seeing double! I’ve actually put dresses in two categories, especially MAXI dresses. When I first heard that they were in style I thought…yay! They’ll feel warm because they cover my legs and they can be very comfy! But what I’m seeing isn’t thrilling me at all. Either they are actually midi dresses and not truly maxi or they are the dreaded Little House on the Prairie style (which is adorable on a 17-year-old!) – tons of them! I have had a very hard time finding maxi dresses that I can actually recommend to a client or for myself, but I’ll keep looking as the season goes along. Here’s the style that is everywhere:

White Tank Tops

What? When are white tank tops NOT in? I think the fashion trend gurus are bored or just plain tired or something. I can’t think of a time when you would worry about committing a fashion faux pas because you were wearing a white tank top. But at least now you’ll know you’re a trendsetter when you wear one!

That’s the gist of it! What do you see that you’re excited to explore or repurpose in your closet? Have fun dressing and shopping as we head more deeply into the Fall season and beyond. As you can see there are more bewitching styles than bothered and bewildering – thank goodness. Enjoy!
