Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered Spring 2022 Fashion Trend Update

It’s always so exciting when spring comes around – especially around here where the winters can feel bleak and endless!

As temperatures warm up we begin to see more pretty styles appear and new possibilities to add to our wardrobes.

Each season as the new trends come out, I enjoy reviewing them to see what’s actually wearable and what’s not…or what’s just plain ridiculous (yes, there are always at least a couple of those!).

This season has some nice options and LOTS of color. I’m always happy to see that although they do tend to hyper-focus on ‘bright’ colors which aren’t everyone’s best choice even if that is the energy we want to pull in to our wardrobes as the sun gets higher in the sky.

Check out my take on the highs and lows of the upcoming seasonal fashion trends and I’d love to hear what your favorites are and which ones make you laugh out loud!!

BEWITCHED

Colors

This season invites in quite a bit of mint green, saturated tie-dye, lots of bright colors as well as soft lilac, sky blue, caramel and many shades of yellow. Even 90’s neon is here for fun! Of course, black and white are always on trend if they work for you. Oh, and periwinkle, the supposed color of the year, is on trend, BUT I’m not seeing a lot of it anywhere (sigh! It’s such a beautiful color that it makes me sad that they don’t make more clothes in it)! This is a lovely example of a more vibrant tie-dye top. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Power Suits

Speaking of color, you can find pantsuits in nearly every color imaginable. What’s nice about that is you can split up the pieces to wear separately as well. Suits paired with bra and bikini tops are also hot, but I suspect most of us will skip that trend. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Colorful Pants

Following on the power suit trend, is pants in pretty colors. Have some fun with this, BUT be sure to know what you’ll wear on top so the pants don’t languish unworn in your closet! Here’s one example of a vibrant color to wear on bottom. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Eyelet and Cutouts

Eyelet and cutouts tend to be a favorite spring trend and this season is no exception. Eyelet can be a bit on the sweet side and cutouts can feel edgier so perhaps there is something for everyone. Of course, the color of each piece or how you combine it with the rest of the outfit can influence the energy and feel of the look as well. This is one of my favorites so far. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Pleats and Feminine Dresses

Pleated skirts can be a tricky trend because they tend to look best with something tucked in, and they can also draw focus (or add volume) to our mid-section. If you’re sensitive about that, it could be a good trend to ignore. Or try a fun pleated top or one of the pretty, feminine dresses that are everywhere this Spring. This pleated top is lovely. Halter Tops

Halters are popular every summer because they reveal more skin and are cool. They can be lovely although they can also be tricky for pairing them with a bra. This spring string halters are particularly fashionable. Before you dismiss them completely, you might want to take a look at one like this (and just get your strapless bra ready). This one is in pretty, soft pastels and comes in sizes 2 to 24. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Pedal Pushers

I’m not against these, but sometimes they can look a tad frumpy. They generally hit somewhere around the knee (usually below) although if you look up the definition of pedal pushers you’ll see all kinds of length suggestions. I can just say that from my growing up, our pedal pushers hit right below the knee. I couldn’t resist showing you this yummy color! (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Gingham and Checks

Wearing gingham or checks always makes me feel like I should go on a picnic so the timing is perfect as the warmer weather descends. There are some very pretty styles and lovely colors this season. This one is a gorgeous shade of blue and comes in sizes xs to 3x. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Daytime Sequins

Sparkles make me feel happy so, if the same is true for you, why relegate the joy only to evening wear? Sparkling during the day is fun and in style these days (yay!). You don’t have to go full out sparkle as you can see by this pretty top below. (Click the photo to see all the details.)

Sunglasses

Who doesn’t need a pair of fabulous sunglasses for the summer? I have to admit (with dismay) I’ve never been cool (although in my next life I plan to be), but I actually CAN feel a tiny bit cool with the right sunglasses. So what’s in style right now? Pretty much anything that feels good, but rimless sunglasses and colored lenses are REALLY in or a modified cat eye (see below) with pointed corners or oversized squares. Have fun with your sunglasses this summer or maybe even have more than one pair! (Click the photo to see all the details.)

BOTHERED

In the Bothered category, it’s less about ‘what were they thinking’ although those arise from time to time and some are so silly they are not worth reporting but often more about ‘who’ is going to wear them. Often (but not always) the answer is someone very young and super trendy. I have a few to share with you:

Black & White

Really? Do we have to put this out there every season? We KNOW a lot of people like to wear black and white (even if it might not be their best color combination), but for some of us it’s overwhelming and harsh and gets boring. Thankfully this season we have lots of other pretty colors from which to choose. And, of course, if black and white makes your heart sing, go for it – that’s really what dressing is all about!

Super Sheer Fabrics

Maybe I’m just too private or it’s too much work, but a fabric that is so sheer that you can see everything underneath or that NEEDS something to be worn under it (which defeats the purpose on a hot day), just boggles my mind.

BEWILDERED

Bewildering styles are sometimes about the sheer ugliness of something (at least in my opinion) OR because the trend is so hard to pull off that I encourage you to approach it with great care. It can also be because they say it’s a trend, but where can you find it? If something is a trend it should be obviously available, right?

Slouchy Trousers

I’m not totally against these, but they can be tricky to pull off without looking like you’re drowning in fabric. Generally, slouchy trousers are worn with something fitted and tucked in on top or a cropped top (as you can see below) OR sometimes carefully worn with a slouchy or oversized top – strategically paired, of course.

Dresses Over Pants

This is one of those really tricky trends that can be oh, so cool (like my friend, Suzanne Dekyvere, a fabulous image consultant in Australia (@suzannedekyvere) – see below) or it can look like you got dressed in the dark and in a hurry…with questionable results. I’m not talking a dress over leggings, but actual pants with a dress on top. The dress can range from short and sweet to long and funky. You won’t find a lot of pre-made dresses with pants. This is more of a trend you get to create for yourself. Of course, whatever you choose (if you go with this trend at all), you’ll want to be sure it fully expresses YOU!

Fringe

I’m not bewildered by fringe, in general. Fringe can be fun. But while they say it’s a spring trend I’m really not seeing a lot of it out there other than on handbags and an occasional skirt or Western-style shirt. Maybe it will pop up later or maybe that’s enough?

Crochet

I think crocheted items can be fun and pretty, especially as a handbag in the summer or a top with a touch of crochet in places to add texture. What I don’t understand is this particular crochet swimsuit cover up. Exactly what is this covering?

There you have it! We are still seeing the oversized, shapeless clothing options and an over-abundance of super casual garments. Whatever your dream wardrobe looks like, I encourage you to hold out for what makes your heart sing. Never settle for good enough when you are buying something new or putting together an outfit from what you own. Figure out (on your own or with my help) what brings you the greatest joy (whether it includes one of these current trends or not) and create a wardrobe full of THAT! Then getting dressed becomes fun and easy.

I hope you saw some pieces that entice you and that you have fun exploring all the possibilities.

Enjoy!
