As fabrics get cozier and sleeves get a bit longer, we begin to ease into fall. I always look forward to being able to layer more comfortably (I love wearing jackets) and my warm color palette always seems easier to find this time of year.
What about you? Do you look forward to the change of seasons or do you go kicking and screaming into the cooler weather? You might even be torn between the two!
Since we are on the verge of fall, let’s look at what we can expect for styles so when you’re ready you can review your wardrobe and see what needs to be replaced or where you might want to add something new.
I’ll share the upcoming fashion trends in detail as we see the beginning of a return to elegance (finally!). The links below will take you to a specially curated catalogue with nearly 200 of the most wearable and versatile choices among the trends. This can help you refine your own searches and give you a taste of what’s out there and will make your shopping a breeze if you see something you want now (things tend to sell out quickly these days)!
This fall you’ll see some perennial favorites and some trends that are continuing to go the distance. I always include a big section on ‘Ginger’s Favorites’ even if they don’t fall into a specific trend. And, of course, I’ll share some crazy styles in the section called, ‘Who Wears These Things!’ Want to go straight to the catalogue? Click HERE.
Without further ado…let’s get to it!
BEWITCHED
Colors
I always look forward to the colors in the fall since they tend to be a bit warmer and richer. I also know those deeper color trends can often make it harder for someone with a light, cool color palette to find clothes, but the good news is that these days we get a reasonable mix of colors from which to choose. The three hottest colors are a rich burgundy, all shades of gray and what some are referring to as ’50 Shades of Green!’
But not only that, there are some softer colors like light, icy blue, butter yellow, camel and soft pink. These 3 colors are one example of over 40 examples here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ
Leopard & Zebra Print
While animal print always seems to be around, it is truly front and center this season—especially leopard. You’ll see leopard print on everything from tops to dresses to jackets and shoes. There will be cool, warm (see below) and moody leopard prints and I share a variety of my favorites (click photo below to see them all).
Zebra print runs more fun and light with higher contrast. While you can go the route of the typical black and white zebra, colorful zebra prints are around, too…like this vibrant pink sweater.
Plaid & Houndstooth
Both of these patterns pop up pretty much every fall, but this season there seem to be more color options including this beautiful mid-tone blue with burgundy plaid. See many more options here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ
Blazers and Cropped Jackets
Whether you want to explore the cropped jacket options or you prefer a blazer style, there is something for everyone and in SO many colors! Not to mention that everything is built around being comfortable. You can have a jacket with a removable hood to either casualize or elevate the style, a non-traditional denim jacket or a cozy knit blazer (and so much more). Why not have both cropped and long so you’re ready for everything. See more than 25 of my favorites by clicking the photo below.
Wide Leg Jeans & Trousers
Wide leg jeans and trousers are back and they look great on everyone (yes, even petites!). It’s a matter of choosing the right length and width and being strategic about what you pair with them (as you would when creating any outfit). What’s fun is that, in addition to the typical wide leg jean style below, they come in a variety of colors as you can see here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ
Skirts—So Many Choices!
Yes, mini-skirts are still in and you can definitely have fun with them with tights and boots. But if you prefer something longer, that’s great, too. You’ll find midi skirts of all styles…from straight denim or faux leather skirts to pleated skirts (I share a few of my favorites that don’t add tons of volume like many pleated skirts do) to full skirts. There is something for everyone and I share more than 15 beautiful options here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ
One word of caution…midi skirts can look amazing and they can also look and feel frumpy so be sure you love it and feel amazing before you keep it.
Shoes, Boots & Sneakers
There are so many amazing shoe, boot and sneaker styles from which to choose so you might need to add more than one to your wardrobe. Slightly higher shaft ankle boots are in and work beautifully with straight or wide leg pants and jeans. Every sneaker or shoe style in red or burgundy is right on trend and metallic sneakers are a go. Plus, every heel height for shoes and boots works. Yay! This makes me so happy.
Here’s a sampling of some of the great options out there and you have to see my favorite plaid shoe here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ
Bows
We usually think of bows in the spring when trends tend to lean sweet and frilly. But they are back for fall in a totally different way—kind of fun and whimsical like the one below (and I share several others).
Chunky Knits
Textured and chunky sweaters (although not excessively long and oversized as in the past, thank goodness!) are in for the winter. There just aren’t many available yet since fall hasn’t even officially started! Give them a month and you’ll start to see more.
Wrap/Scarf Coats
Winter coats with built in scarves are great although sometimes I find they don’t actually offer the warmth we need here in New England. It’s still a bit early to see winter coats available, but stay tuned!
BOTHERED
Clashing Colors
Color clashing has been a trend for a while, and I don’t really have anything against it. Now, however, they are trying to tell us that monochromatic is out and clashing colors are the way to go. Ignore them! Monochromatic is always elegant and beautiful. That said, if you want to venture into clashing colors, enjoy and be sure you’re wearing the outfit with confidence since that will help it feel trendy and cool rather than like you got dressed in the dark.
Skirts
Yes, skirts are in this category as well as in the Bewitched category. The main reason is that mid-length styles can look cool and stylish or they can easily fall into the frumpy category (pleats can pull rather than hang smoothly, the actual length of the garment might need to be tweaked, shoes can make or break the look and what you wear on top can energize the outfit or make it feel blobby). You might not be able to tell which way it will go until you try it on and play a bit. Believe me, I’ve experienced this myself. But, if you like this trend, don’t give up. There is something out there for everyone.
BEWILDERED
Tissue Thin Turtlenecks
Kind of like sleeveless turtlenecks I’ve never been able to figure out when you wear them. Part of your body will be cold while the other part is hot. And with a sheer turtleneck, you most likely will want to wear a cami under it. Maybe I’m just sensitive to too many layers and things starting to feel bulky or fussy so ignore me if that’s the case. There are definitely some pretty tissue thin turtlenecks out there (like the one below) and if you’re excited by what you see, go for it and enjoy!
I’ve had a blast pulling together close to 200 items from a variety of stores with a range of sizes and price points. You’ll see a couple of sections in the special catalogue I curated for you (https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H&SFQPZ) not listed above (e.g., stripes and jewelry) and of course, be sure to check out ‘Ginger’s Favorites’ section with over 30 suggestions as well as the ‘Who Wears These Things!’ section with 10+ crazy styles.
Perhaps you’ll find you already have some of these styles in your wardrobe or you’ll see something that speaks to you to add to what you already own. Most of all have fun exploring and curating your own wardrobe and I’d love to hear what your favorite fall styles are!
With beauty, style & grace,
Ginger
