“Enclothed Cognition” – ever heard of it? Neither had I until a client (actually her husband) sent me an article that recently appeared in the New York Times. It refers to the place where what people ‘think’ about what we wear and how we ‘feel’ about what we wear intersects.
It’s an empowering place, to be sure.
In the article, two professors from Northwestern University did a study that was featured in The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology showing how ‘clothes systematically influence wearers’ psychological processes.’ This is exactly what I have been talking about for years!
In order to reap the benefits of ‘enclothed cognition’ you do not necessarily have to completely overhaul your wardrobe or stretch your purchases beyond your budget. It can be the simplest things that can have the most power.
And, it begins with intention.

Then, as the article suggests, “…for the next week, try giving yourself permission to think about what you wear and how it makes you feel,” and see what happens. It’s a great exercise to begin a new year to be filled with your beauty, style and grace.
