Secondhand Sophistication: Unboxing Sustainable Fashion Finds!

Sustainability is a popular (and important) trend these days and nowhere is it talked about more than when it comes to clothing. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking of clothing as disposable or, while that might be more extreme than how most of us approach our wardrobe, it’s still easy to fall into the trap of thinking it’s okay if we just wear something a handful of times because it didn’t cost that much.

The problem with this way of thinking is that our purchases contribute heavily to the degradation of our environment as millions of tons of clothing end up in landfills each year – even if we’ve conscientiously donated items (they don’t all get sold to someone to wear!). (For more on this topic, check out my 3-part series on ‘Eco-friendly Wardrobe Secrets.’ This is part 3: https://totalimageconsultants.com/blog/2015/02/20/eco-friendly-wardrobe-secrets-you-never-knew-part-3-conscientious-consumerism-how-to-discard-your-unwanted-clothing/)

One of the ways to ease our impact on the environment while still bringing in some new clothing to wear is shopping consignment – whether in a brick-and-mortar store or online (as I’ll share with you).

Recently, I was in need of some very casual, mostly around the house, tops since many of mine had worn out (after years of wearing them). Here’s an unboxing video where I’ll show you the items I recently purchased from ThredUP (https://www.thredup.com/). Check out what I got, how much I am keeping and what didn’t work. Notice the variety!

Not only have I shopped at ThredUp (and consignment, in general) for myself, but I have also helped clients make purchases from them as well. If you’re exploring ThredUp and would like to get 40% off (if this is your first time purchasing from them) AND free shipping, let me know and I’m happy to share a special link with you. ThredUp also has a good return policy although some of the items I bought this time were part of an end of season sale ($3-$4 per item!) and not returnable.

I’d also love to hear what your experience has been with shopping consignment. Is it a go-to option for you or do you avoid it? What goodies have you found and what’s your favorite place to shop consignment?
