This past week was fashion week in Boston, and I attended a fashion show. The designs on the runway were beautiful, but (and this is a big but) fur was everywhere and on nearly every creation! What is that all about? My heart was breaking with every step the models took. I couldn’t wait to leave.
As a result, I have to ask this question as unpopular as it might be with some people. Why does anyone knowingly and so seemingly joyfully wear fur? For years now, there has been no other area of animal agriculture (with the possible exception of downer cows) that has had more visibility and dissemination of information than the fur industry replete with all the accompanying horrors and suffering. No one can say that she didn’t know what she was wearing when she chooses to include fur in her wardrobe. It is what it is, and it’s obvious what it is. What I don’t understand is how someone can disregard the brutality of the industry for the mere sake of fashion (if you can call it that).
I understand how awesomely beautiful fur is – on the animal born with it. If it’s the look of fur that appeals to someone (and not the supposed status symbol (don’t get me started), there are amazing faux fur options available. You get the look and feel of fur without the agony and suffering that accompanies (without exception) the real thing. Look no further than www.fabulousfurs.com.
Wearing fur is the fashion equivalent of eating foie gras. If you do either, this is a heartfelt plea to reconsider. Need convincing? You will sacrifice nothing, and the animals (and your heart) will thank you.
